Jan. 17th, 2018 06:28 pmThe world of Spirits and Kami goes through some distinct social time periods, which are important basics for how you should expect a character's story to flow.
The Age of Kami (/oldest relevant time period): This period comprises of all times when humanity actively worshiped many Gods. It is a time before science was commonplace, which meant that humans explained things they did not understand "Acts of the Gods." During this time, Kami were a very active presence in the world. They inhabited the personas that humans used to explain mysterious phenomenon, and it turn gained the faith that they needed to meet those expectations.
The Kami of ancient times were actually very powerful. When you read about Ancient Gods demanding human sacrifices, it is often very real. Many Kami let their power get the better of them and would keep humanity under an iron, bloody thumb.
The Rise of Science / Kami Massacre: As humans learned science, they were able to banish many mysteries from their world. With this came the accidental slaughter of many Kami. When a Kami's shrine was destroyed, whether it be physical or an idea, they were often swept away with it. Those that were not swept away on accident were often hunted down by Spirit Hunters.
Spirit Hunters were humans who felt threatened by Spirit and Kami, often because Spirits do have the potential to be enormously powerful. They were honestly justified in the early days of their work, since many powerful Kami were abusing their power. Spirit Hunters typically don't wield swords or guns, but use facts and science to abolish a Kami's faith. To this day, Spirit Hunting is a common practice. But rather than it being occultic, Spirit Hunting is scientific. You can tell a "genuine" Spirit Hunter from how much they seem like a Hollywood Vampire Hunter.
The Period of Complacence: This period occurred during the 1910s to 2010s. It was a hundred year period where Spirit Hunters no longer needed to actively hunt Kami. Many Kami still exists, but they were hiding in mysteries that humans would surely solve. It was a waiting game, wondering if they would be solved and destroyed that way, or become so mysterious and powerful that a Spirit Hunter would be assigned to them.
During this period, the most powerful Kami were the Kami of Matter and of Ani-Matter. They reigned over the others as the true creators of the world. These concepts were so reliant on Kami that if either of them were destroyed, the world would likely be destroyed. So they held some sway with Spirit Hunters and could 'politically' motivate them to leave Spirits alone.
However, this period was still quite miserable for Spirits. They rarely had a way to exist and were simply spectators.
The Era of Recognition: In 2013, the Anti-Matter Kami's Sacred Child flipped reality on its head. She announced her existence to the world and began making international headlines. This created an Era where humans were beginning to believe in Kami again. More and more Sacred Children joined her in making their powers a public spectacle.
Spirit Hunters had lost their practice during the 100 years of laziness. They scrambled to keep up with damage control in any way that they could.
The Scientific Proof of Spirits: Then, in 2015, Kami and Spirits were scientifically proven to exist. In an instant, every Spirit was visible. The world was suddenly flooded by the reality that had been just out of sight. There was a brief period of chaos, with society clashing over what to do about Spirits.
In the end, it was agreed internationally that Spirits had the same right to live as humans. They became protected. In this era, it is very common for households to welcome Spirits like new family members. The fact your alarm clock never goes off? Why you're always missing one sock from the dryer? Why some people just seem immune to cold season? These tiny mysteries are the shrine and basis for small Spirits, who now live in your house with you.
